From Canada With Love

After a career in advertising that spanned nearly two decades, I moved to Denver with my wife Kae and began making art full time.

Artist’s Statement

Questions of identity are at the heart of my practice. While cultural history and personal experience frame much of what we think of as identity, I am interested in exploring the more “fluid” or non-fixed aspects of being human. Moments of transition or passage, contradictory emotions, and states of duality are what I frequently explore in my work. I am also drawn to subjects that find humor in the absurdities of ordinary life. Depicting the human form in abstract or non-literal spaces frees me to explore its metaphorical and psychological potential, in order to make visible the complexities of the self.

Bio

I was born in Quebec City (Canada) but 15 years ago moved to Montreal and that’s what gave a big boost to my art career.
Here I discovered a vast work environment that would have been inaccessible to me in Quebec city. I then gathered a wide array of very stimulating experiences that helped fueled my artistic practice. I was a portrait painter at the Palais de Justice, I worked as a scenic painter, made props for the cinema industry, and masks at the Cirque du Soleil. Now I manufacture artist oil paint at Kama Pigment. The same paint that I mostly use in my work.
I am now a multidisciplinary artist with a master’s degree in visual arts and the bulk of my creation is expressed in drawings and paintings using only traditional mediums. I work in book illustration and I love to participate in collective art exhibition with a thematic. My favorite media is definitely oil painting.

For about 20 years, at the beginning of my career, I was telling stories through comics I self- published and now I tell those stories through my paintings. I publish my sketches and my various projects on Instagram (@docteurpeste) and I have a website showing a good overview of my production (www.vaar.ca).
