Artist Statement:

We are of this land. You can slash and burn but our roots, our seeds will always rise from this earth again. 

With my art I strive to add a primal, universal, and multicultural story to every subject I paint. One that I hope everyone can connect with. That idea of the primal is central to how I think about my work. When you look at human cultures in their earliest stages, they all share the same fundamental needs: survival, security, connection, expression. The divisions between people are superficial. At our core, we all need the same things, and I want my paintings to hold that truth visually. When you look at one of my figures, I want you to see not just a specific person from a specific background, but yourself, and your ancestors, and our shared humanity. That’s a tall order for a painting, I know. But that’s what I’m reaching for every time I pick up a brush. I hope it lands for you the way I intend it to. 

When you hurt another, you hurt yourself.
